Have you ever had one of those days where you wanted to sew…but didn’t quite know where to start or what you wanted to work on? Yesterday was one of those days. I decided to just “sew something” until I figured out what the “main” project for the day would be. Well that “something” turned out pretty cute, I think! I’ve had a Layer Cake of “Oink a Doodle Moo” that has been sitting on the shelf for a little while. I’ve raided it a couple of times to use some of the cute chicken wire prints for other projects–so I didn’t have a full Layer Cake to work with. I decided to go with a simple 5 x 6 layout of squares.
“Oink a Doodle Moo” by Moda is one of those collections that works just how it is…in fact, I can’t even imagine cutting up the cute barnyard prints…they are simply perfect.
My finish, so far, is a small quilt 48” x 57 ½”. I’m trying to decide on an outer border and backing, and then I’ll quilt this myself. It will be a good sized quilt to practice my machine quilting on.
By the way, working on this fun, simple project was just what I needed. By the time I finished I knew what I really wanted to work on…I’ll be back to share some snippets of that soon! Do you ever work on random projects until you are sure about what you really want to sew? Any ideas on this topic?
Thanks so much for stopping by!

I need to force myself to do what you did. I find it easier to avoid the studio altogether which accomplishes nothing! Cute quilt top!

I think this fabric line is so cute – it has to inspire! I grab my barrels of scraps and just start sewing squares together – no need to really concentrate on it (dark to a lite only) and by the time that has filled the void, the light bulb goes off.

I like to organize fabrics or clean my machine, change needles, wind bobbins, etc. while brainstorming or deciding my next move. I also did a little sewing with link a Doodle this week too. Made a craft apron my my girl's preschool teacher. Thought it was perfect for her!

I am one of those who will just sew something till I get an idea what my next big project or finish up on something else. This is my motivation and most (not always) works.

A couple of days ago, I wanted to sew but needed something "mindless" to take away the stress of the day. Someone had given me a bag of scraps that were mostly 2 and 2.5 inch strips of random lengths. There was a 2 inch strip of black with white dots and a lot of bright colors. I cut the black strip into squares and started sewing the strips together, randomly sewing in a black square. Next I sewed the 2.5 inch strips together end to end. I'm not yet sure what it will become, I'll just keep playing with it until something good happens.

Sherri, what a great way to spend the day! Love it and I think that I might just do the same thing tomorrow…I need some mindless sewing therapy…BADLY! Big Hugs…

Cute quilt – and I know exactly what you mean. I sometimes need a quick project in the middle of those that take a little longer to complete. This will be such a cute little quilt! Love the chicken wire prints.

My problem is that I have so many UFOs that I don't know what to work on first. Do I sew a few Farmer's Wife blocks, or work on the nine patches for Hocuspocusville or finish sewing together last year's Block of the Month — you get the picture!

I totally know this feeling! Today I started working on a quilt that I have a general idea of the pattern, but no idea on the execution. I just started cutting and sewing – sometimes those projects end up being the best ones!
Cute quilt by the way! I like the way you laid out the layer cake

Yes, I do that quite often. Usually I will put out some odds and ends and make a scrappy style quilt for Project Linus. Quick, satisfying, little thought required.

Love your little quilt! I do the random thing far too often, not always with such nice results. My latest random sewing has involved fabrics and lace, eyelet and various trims – all inherited from my mother's sewing room (mostly pastel poly/cottons used to make infant and toddler dresses for her six granddaughters). Last night, I think I've come up with a plan of what to do!

Very cute! I love the farm themed squares. I made a similar quilt for my son recently, with big squares with a vehicle theme. He loves it. I posted about it July 17, 2012. Yours is going to make someone happy.

It's funny that you should ask that, Sherri. A couple weeks ago, I was unable to work on a long term quilt project until I received the batting I'd ordered. I didn't have any other quilting projects that I could work on (I was away from home, and my stash, at the time) , so I spent a week creating my 1st art quilt (a project that had been intimidating me) and began and finished an embroidery project. Both were things I had wanted to do for some time, but had not picked up. Well, as it turns out, I loved making my art quilt, and now I won't be afraid to do that anymore. And I enjoyed the embroidery project, and got it out of my system. So it all worked out. I can't wait to see what else you worked on.

My favorite in-between project is baby burp cloths 🙂 the fronts can be scrappy or not, backs are usually cotton chenille. Fun, easy, fast and done! Ready go with the next shower gift 🙂

Yes, I have those days frequently. I sometimes just putter in my sewing room if I can't find a fun, easy project to work on. 🙂 I like what you worked on!
