My favourite handmade gift is a large doll given to me by my grandmother complete with clothes that she crocheted for it. 40 years later I still have the doll waiting for the day when I can give it to my own daughter. At 2 years old she knows the doll is special and points to it often but respects the fact that the doll is "sleeping" and can't play with her at the moment.

That is a problem as we don't celebrate Christmas with presents. But we do have Sinterklaas. It is not very common giving self made presents. I remember one year when we decided we all had to make our present for someone else ourselves and my mother sewing my (now) DH shorts. Can't remember what I got or made. Another year my mother sewed me a beautiful jacket from furniture fabric, that was awesome!

I've given and received many hand crafted gifts over the years, but for many years when my children were little I would make Christmas Eve pajamas for the family, a gift they could open that night and wear to bed. The very best handmade gift I received when I was a girl growing up was my grandmother made a large suitcase full of dress up clothes for a doll that I called my "high heal" doll (long before Barbie). The clothes were made from scraps of fabrics from both grandmothers' and my mother's sewing. The grandmother that made the doll clothes always made her quilts from the flour sacks from her cafe that she owned. The best gifts that I have made and given are quilts for my family and friends. Oldest son received a Texas Tech quilt last Christmas just because he is such a fan of TT football. Gay

All-time favorite homemade Christmas gift was from my Granny probably close to 60 years ago: an upside down doll, which was one of her specialties. This one was little red riding hood on one side and the other side had grandma in a nightgown and cap, and the cap reversed so that the big bad wolf was on the back side of grandma's head. Not sure but I believe she made this and many others like it from a homemade pattern that she developed. Wish I still had it!

My favorite Christmas gifts made by me were soups in a jar. At first my one cousin looked at it funny, wondering what to do with it. A few months later she called me and thanked me for it as she had been in a car accident and it came inreally handy for a quick and healthy dinner for her family. 🙂

I think it is a tie between 2 gifts I made in high school, the first was a red plaid dinosaur for my new step sister, who was 8 at the time, she loved it! The second was a 8 spoke 36" in diameter God's Eye for my mother in colors for the new house.
What a nice thing to giveaway.

Love my schnibbles you gave me. This is so cute. My favorite homemade gift was what my MIL did for all my kids last year. She went through literally thousands and thousands of family photos and made every grandchild their personal scrapbook. I hate scrapbooking so I was so glad to see my kids had a photo albumn. My teenage kids even loved them. It was a fabulous effort and a great gift. You've got a lot of comments. I'd love to read them all but that is fairly impossible!

The Christmas present I will never forget was undoubtedly a wooden bed that my father made me. Moreover, this Christmas was very special. It was a very difficult year for my parents, there was no money to buy gifts for for the four children and this was the solution. I remember that the bed had "tucha" written on the headboard, with some letters cut out of sticky blue velvet.

I would have to say the best gift I remember making was a memory table cloth for my mother in law. With some help from my husband we transfered old family photographs onto a table cloth. We most have gone through thousands of pictures. The best part of it was watching her face when she opened it. She was moved to tears. I don't think I will forget that.

The powder blue & white sweater with the ice skating bunnies on it that my Great-Grandmother knit for me. I love that sweater. I wore it until I had to keep the sleeves pushed up all the time because the were too short. I think that was 4th grade. I still have that sweater. I think the matching hat is long lost… I think about have someone knit me an adult size copy; but that means I'd have to let it out of my house and I don't think I can do that.

This one is easy! My Grandmother Staples (the quilter in the family) the woman who passed this precious craft onto me passed away September 2008. I inherited everything sewing related and also a beaded chanel bed spread that she received as a wedding gift in the 1940’s. This bed spread had seen better days so I decided to cut it and make Christmas gifts for my aunts. I made chanel snowmen for each aunt/uncle and there was not a dry eye in the house. I also made myself one and would not trade it for the anything in the world.

When I was a little girl my grandmother would make me clothes every year, and I love every single one of them. I still have many of them stored at my parents' house and I would think of her every time I see them. I think this is why I picked up sewing myself, is to be able to make memories and keepsakes for my children and their children.

My favorite handmade gift was a pair of socks I knit for my mother two years ago. They were only my second pair ever and…realized that I had no idea where the first sock was after finishing the second. I had to buy another skein of yarn and mentally changed 'Christmas' to 'February birthday' while I cast on for another pair.
Then, the day after Christmas, I found the first sock in a drawer! What a relief…

My Mother gave me a smooth stone pendant necklace when I was in my early twenties. I had picked up the stone from beside the Mississippi River when I was a very young child, and she had saved it for many years. We had been traveling from our home to visit my Grandmother who lived hundreds of miles away. I had picked it up to take home to my other Grandmother that we had left behind. My Mother kept it all those years (long after my Grandmother who received it had passed away) and had it made into a necklace. That is one of my favorite handmade gifts.

Ah, so beautiful! And I'm in desperate need of a pincushion. How'd you know?
My family has been doing a homemade Christmas since I was eleven, so it's hard for me to choose just one favorite homemade gift. One particularly memorable gift, though, was a small pillow my teenage brother made me right before I went off to college. He hot-glue "appliqued" the words "Hands off my boss pillow, you!" on the front with a sprig of matching holly. Classic. A few years before that he got our older sister to help him make me a Newsie costume for my American Girl doll. Yes, read that right. I hope that brightens your day!

My favorite "homemade" gift is the same every year. My children wake up early and make us breakfast. We always have to stay in bed so they can "do it themselves". It is a nice treat, especially when they all come in with plates and fresh orange juice and big smiles and we all cram on the bed to eat Christmas breakfast together.

Ok, I will have to say my most favorite homemade gift was actually gifts from my mom when I was a child. She would stay up way late many evenings with her bedroom door shut sewing for us. I could hear her sewing machine just whirling away as she busily made my sisters and I special outfits each year. She was /is a wonderful seamstress and her projects said "love" to me and still do! I love my Mom and the sacrificial way she gave to us and still does! To this day I absolutely love homemade gifts best of all!!

After she passed,I took her bells and did the finish and made boxes to hold the bell. At Christmas I sent the bells with a letter explaining how they came to be to Family and Friends from my Mother.
