Quilt Market Recap Part One Fall 2015

Happy Tuesday! I'm sorry it's been so long since I posted; I intended to post again about the booth projects before I left, but it just didn't happen. I arrived home late last night from International Quilt Market in Houston, Texas, and it was a wonderful jam-packed five days of the most amazing quilts and quilty inspiration. Moda/United Notions was celebrating their fortieth anniversary which made this market extra special. Moda is an incredible company with an even more incredible founder and personnel. Words really can't express how grateful I am to be associated with Moda and United Notions.

I haven't had time to really process everything I took in at the market, so today I'll begin by posting about my booth.

We arrived on Thursday afternoon and took a quick peek at the convention center to see what our booth configuration would be. Then Friday morning we arrived early to set up. Our booth spaces in the Moda Designer Studio section are only 6 feet wide and 10 feet deep, so you have to really work to make everything fit and also be  kind of visible. There is just no way in such a small booth to display everything fully.

We were happy to be able to get all of the quilts in good positions, though, and we put one of our favorites as the center quilt. The weather was incredibly humid and rainy. The Houston area was dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Patricia moving through, and we received over 12 inches of rain in 36 hours. I love rain, but this was something I'd never seen. Anyway, the humidity did quite the number on our hair styling, so the only solution was to straighten it and hope it stayed straight!

 Opening Morning in our booth

One of the things we wanted to show about our Valley collection was the fact that it is great for lots of sewing other than the quilts (of course the quilts are my favorite). I made the Chambray Dress for Chelsi using one of our favorite prints, Creosote in Navy. The pattern can be found in the book Handmade Style: 23 Must-Have Basics to Stitch, Use, and Wear. I loved the pattern, and Chelsi wants me to make her another one. I think I might make it for myself and wear it as a top with leggings or jeans.

Another project we made from the book was the Floor Pouf which is the perfect size for an ottoman or extra seating space. I used fabric scraps for the top and Moda Mochi Linen for the sides and base of the pouf. There is a zipper in the bottom for stuffing. We just used regular bed pillows for market to make it easy to transport the pouf, but we'll stuff it with a regular polyester stuffing now that we're home.

We also made (and had some friends help us make) some smaller projects for display in the booth. Below on the top shelf left to right is the Open Wide pouch bag (pattern from  ByAnnie  and made by our friend Kaitlyn), a doll made by our friend who owns the Etsy shop Sew Darling, and the Feedsack Bag by Fig Tree & Company (great pattern, I made it the day before we left). On the second shelf are two more Open Wide pouches in the smaller sizes. Some simple floor pillows rounded out the shelf portion of our booth. I also made a Get Out of Town Duffle with a pattern from ByAnnie. You can see it on top of the floor pouf in the photo with Chelsi.

Well, it's time to unpack and sort out everything I want to work on in the next little while. I have a couple of publication projects to work on, but this is the time of year I sew fun things that have been on the "bucket list." I can't wait to get started!

I'll be back with more market re-cap asap! Thanks so much for stopping by

You ladies and your booth look so amazing!! I know you work really hard to produce your fabrics and then get everything made and look so wonderful. Wow, you certainly give us inspiration and it shows that you love what you do.
I love the idea of making a top to wear with leggings too. Thanks a million for those of us that can't be at Houston Market. What a dream!

We needed that rain here in Houston. Sorry that it sorta interfered with Market. I usually plan to wear curly hair if it's rainy - that way if my hair gets frizzy, it's harder to tell! Wonderful details to your booth. I love Chelsi's dress, too, and I would definitely wear it with leggings or tights. I'll be at Festival this weekend. It's amazing that they can switch from Market to Festival so quickly!

I had a friend there, maybe you met her. Joleene Koyman with Missouri Star Quilt Co. and developer of Sew Red Glasses. I still want to meet you some day when I come to Overton.
