With my determination to work on “works in progress” this summer, I decided to do some Farmer’s Wife blocks the other day. Sometimes you just can’t stop at a couple!
I used scraps from Tapestry for this group of blocks. One of my favorite things about this quilt is that I haven’t bought any fabric for it at all…and it’s going to be a really big quilt!
Block 96, Tulip…I heart this block. I wasn’t sure about my color choices in the beginning; I nervously followed the placement found in the book, and in the end I really liked how it turned out.
Block 79, Silver Lane–with this one I kind of wish I had chosen a different color for the pinwheels in the center. Again I followed the color guide from the book, but this time I wish I had done something a little different.
Block 108, Windmill–cute as can be…for sure! I used templates for this one. I’m really trying to stay away from the templates, but this one was fast and simple to make!
Block 75, Rosebud…maybe my favorite of this group. It’s simple and sophisticated…love this block!
I also made a group of blocks using California Girl scraps…I was getting nervous about using too many of my Tapestry scraps!
Block 91, Strawberry Basket…this one is my favorite of this bunch!
Block 85, Square Dance…a little too “busy” for me…think I should have used a solid fabric instead of the yellow print.
Block 44, Gentleman’s Fancy…I like this one as well. I knew I wanted both outer fabrics to be blues and played around with a lot of different center fabrics before deciding on this one!
Block 76, Sawtooth…this is from some older Fig Tree fabrics…not sure which line since I couldn’t find any pieces with selvedges, but I think they might be from Allspice Tapestry. This one was simple…I found a pattern for it (without templates) in one of my block books.
So…I counted up my blocks, and I have 80 now. I only have 31 to go…that sounds completely doable! I didn’t really realize when I started this quilt how big the project really was…it just goes to show that if you work on something a little bit at a time it will eventually get finished!
I’m hoping to start setting my other version (made with the Christmas fabrics) together this week, too. It will be a nice-sized lap quilt.
Thanks so much for stopping by…have a terrific day!

I have been busy cutting out lots of blocks. I haven't made any by the template method yet, but I know I will have to soon. Never used them before, so slightly apprehensive.

I just started working on FW. I am frustrated with the templates that are provided with the book because they are not right. I would love to know where you came across correctly sized templates for that sawtooth block.

You're making swift progress. It'll be a very pretty quilt with those soft colors.

Lovely blocks! And love the "nostalgic" older-figgy fabric block…I think it's my favorite!

Your blocks are so very pretty! Watching your progress on this project just got expensive for me :0) I bought a fat quarter bundle of California Girl – now I just need to get the book…

I need to work on my FW blocks. I'm doing mine in civil war repros and sewing them by hand. I'm a glutton for punishment. LOL

Ps – I just noticed Karen M's post… I wondered if she has seen Marti Michell's free instructions for using her templates that match the FW? If you sign up, they will send you a set of instructions monthly on how to use their templates (thick/sturdy plastic) to make all but maybe one of the 111 blocks. Just thought I would pass that on. check here: (and she has more info on her site too, about all the sets you will need for perfect templates to make this quilt!)

I went to Marti's website and she will start sending out those PDF templates in Sept 2012 again. You have to sign up before the end of August…
From the website: "Marti used our templates to make all but 10 of the 111 six-inch blocks in the book! To receive template conversions, send an email to cservice@frommarti.com and put "sign me up!" in the subject line. There are 10 PDFs, one every 2 weeks. Our next mailing schedule begins in September '12, so the list will close the end of August. Send an email to cservice@formmarti.com with "sign me up for the FALL Farmer's Wife list" in the subject line."
