Favorite Notions and Organizing Products for Quilters

Basics

(Rotary cutter, cutting mat, and rulers)

Olfa is my favorite brand of rotary cutter.  Most of the time I use the Splash version with it's contoured comfortable design.

I always replace the blades with Olfa blades as well.  I've tried other brands, and they just don't last as long.  I like to keep extra blades on hand, too.  When I teach, I always encourage students to come to class with a sharp blade as it helps accuracy in cutting.

My favorite cutting mats are also by Olfa.  Here are my favorite size mats and where I use them:
Rulers, rulers, rulers!  My favorites are by the Creative Grids Company.  Here are the necessities:
Of course there are many other rulers that are extremely helpful, but you'll be able to work on just about any project with the above rulers.

Notions

I absolutely love my Clover Seam ripper!

Clover Wonder Clips are perfect for binding and for bag making.

I use Aurifil 50 wt. thread for all of my machine piecing and binding.  My two go-to colors are the light beige  Aurifil Cotton Mako Thread 50 Weight 1422 Yards Beige Light Sand and the more creamy white Aurifil A1050-2024 Mako Cotton Thread Solid 50WT 1422Yds White

You can't go wrong with Clover pins, either! (The Clover pins are a longer pin; if you prefer a shorter pin, the Little House Glass Head pins are perfect). I actually use both of these pins every day.

And I love these small scissors which have an amazingly sharp point, these medium-sized scissors, and these large lightweight scissors!

Organizing Products

While you'll find some products on this list specifically made for quilters, many of my favorite organizing products in the sewing room are actually products designed for offices and for organizing bathrooms and pantries! But they work so wonderfully well to keep sewing supplies organized and right at hand.  Here are some of my favorites!

1.  I absolutely love the Lazy Susan I keep on my sewing table.  The compartments are perfect for storing scissors, marking tools, small ruler and accessories, and even rotary cutters.  Get this perfect cutting table storage unit here

2. Another Lazy Susan perfect for storing quilting supplies (and for using in your bathroom and pantry as well) is this clear acrylic divided Lazy Susan!

3.  This photo caddy which coordinates with the Lazy Susan above is perfect for storing rulers and additional tools (there are two separate dividers in the back which will both hold rulers up to 11 1/2" wide with an additional three divided areas in the front where you can store scissors, small rulers, and rotary cutters.  Plus, you can customize the photo inserts with pictures of family, favorite quotes, or quilts!

4.  These baskets are perfect for storing fabrics and pre-cuts.  Recently, I've been trying to move more of my fabric storage out of plastic containers and into containers made of natural fibers.  I love the fact that I can attach a label easily, and that I can organize a lot of fabric in here.  Get these versatile baskets here

5.  I have two bobbin storage rings.  They are perfect for storing bobbins at home in your sewing room, and they also travel well! I like to keep one with just neutral threads and the other one with colors I typically use for bindings.

6.  These project storage boxes are perfect for storing works in progress, and they stack well, too.  I also keep a lot of smaller projects in project storage bags I make...details on this post.

7.  This extra large tote is the perfect size to store rolled up quilts for decor or for use in a family room or bedroom.

8.  And this one is on my wish list...this wood cubby in white or pine has three 9" x 9" wire baskets perfect for storing fabric! And you can hang quilts or decor on the pegs!

Thanks so much for stopping by...and happy quilting!
