Christmas Cabins Quilt Along

Hello! Today I'm sharing something I'm pretty excited about...a Christmas Log Cabin quilt along!  This is a spur of the moment idea I came up with while cleaning up in my sewing room this weekend (I actually did a lot less cleaning than planned but a lot more sewing in return)!

There is a little back story to go along with this, too.  I can't remember the year

exactly, but about 15 years ago or so I made a beautiful Thimbleberries Christmas quilt.  I think it might have been a block of the month project from a quilt shop.  I was really excited about that quilt.  When I finished I had beautiful custom quilting done on it.  I was able to use it for a couple of years and then...we decided to get a king-size bed for our master bedroom.  My Christmas quilt was queen-sized.  So for all of these years I've been using my beloved queen-sized quilt--turning it sideways so it fits a little better.

Saturday I decided I should make a king-sized Christmas quilt...for this year!  And I can give my beloved Thimbleberries quilt to my daughter who has a queen-sized bed and loves dark colors!

I want the new quilt to be scrappy and happy...but not in traditional brights.  Off to my Fig Tree scrap bins I went, and in a pretty short amount of time I'd sewn several blocks. I started to feel like I really might be able to get this done for this year.

And then I started thinking it might be fun to have a sew along for this project.  I'll provide fabric requirements for lap, twin, full, queen, and king...and we can all sew along together!  I'm going to be using my favorite method for these blocks which yields perfect blocks every time, and my fabric cutting information will be based on this method.  You will need the Creative Grids 8" Log Cabin Trim Tool to make these blocks (also available at Amazon here:Creative Grids Quilt Ruler Log Cabin Trim Tool for 8" Finished Blocks (CGRJAW1)).

What I've decided to do is to make two different types of blocks for my quilt: blocks with red centers and alternating green, red, and green strips, and blocks with green centers and alternating red, green, and red strips.

You could also make blocks with just green strips and red centers...or the green centers with red strips.

If you are thinking it might be too late for a Christmas quilt, or want to make it scrappy or with a different style of fabrics, here is an idea of what scrappy blocks look like with this pattern.

I'll post about this quilt along each Tuesday from now through the end of November.  If you're planning on quilting along, I'd love to have you leave a comment letting me know.  Order your rulers now so you can start sewing, and if you want to start cutting light and dark strips that measure 1 3/4" wide by width of fabric along with 2 1/2" squares for your centers you'll be ready to go next week when I post full fabric and cutting information!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Do you think a beginner quilter could tackle this?

I love, love this idea! I have been working on your Block of the Month Program and can't wait for the last 2 blocks to finish up!

I just ordered the grid and I can't wait to get started. I wish I wasn't working so I can start going through my fabric and cutting strips!

My head is saying absolutely not...but my quilt heart is urging me to go for it. I'll get the ruler and maybe start gathering strips...hmm.😂

I would love to join in! Will the quilt be entirely log cabin blocks or will others be added along the way?

Really lovely blocks. I so want to make a log cabin, but have too many projects for gifts to get done. You definitely have inspired me!

I still need the ruler - but I have two baskets full of 2 inch and 2.5 inch strips, so......:)! I just might sew along. Sounds fun, Sherri!

Goody I'm in, I'm soooo excited.

I have the same comment as Little Quiltsong -- Lots of 2" or 2.5" strips from sewing log cabins before, which I would want to use. The only "problem" would be having a larger quilt (but I don't know if I'd call that a problem). I've never used that ruler, would it work for the wider strips?

Will join in the fun also. I purchased the ruler awhile back when you blogged about it. Thanks for the quilt along!

I have a MartiMitchell #8038 Log Cabin ruler and would love to join, but will that work just as well? I used it once already and found it tedious to precut all the strips, but the result was a lovely little quilt. Is your method similar? Thanks https://thatfabricfeeling.wordpress.com/2017/09/12/crisp-autumn-air-cranberries-honey-friendship-braids/

I have this ruler and log cabins are a favorite. I’ll try to follow along with this using some Snowbirds fabric I have. It will be pretty 💗

what a great idea, i've wanted to make a log cabin for a while now, not that i need another project at the moment [to add to the 9 already going, but i do finish them all in the end!]. about the ruler, you mentioned the 8 inch block ruler, does that only work for 8 inches, or can it be used also for smaller sizes? can't wait to start!
