Scrappy Quilt Sew Along

Hello and happy Friday! I'm super excited to say that I've got everything ready to start the scrappy patchwork quilt sew along I mentioned on Monday's post about a couple of my grandmother's quilts!

I'm glad I looked more closely at my grandmother's quilt and found the pattern!

At first glance I thought the blocks were randomly placed...so happy for the pleasant surprise of a specific design...and it even ended up being a bit different than I expected when I finally mapped it all out!

So many people seemed very excited to get started that I thought I'd start today with the first post, and post directions each Friday for the next three weeks...you can follow along weekly and have a terrific scrap quilt by then, or sew along at your own pace!

We will be making a 66 1/2" x 78 1/2" scrap quilt.  Our quilts will be the same width as my grandmothers but just a bit shorter.

This week's assignment is the easiest... simply cut 57 squares 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" from a variety of light, medium, and dark fabrics. My grandmother used mostly medium and low-volume fabrics (although she never used the term "low-volume") with a few dark squares here and there.

I'm actually thinking of making two of these quilts during the sew along...but you'll have to wait until next Friday to see the direction I'm going with both of them!

If you're on Instagram, I would love to follow along with your progress this week...tag your photos of the squares for your quilt with the hashtag #scrappypatchworkquilts

Thanks so much for stopping by...have a wonderful weekend!

I'm looking forward to this sew-along but first I have to finish some other projects.

Love this as a way to bust some scraps! Need clarification please... 57 squares of light, medium, dark. Do you mean 57 of each value or 57 total? If total, should they be evenly divided - 19 of each of just random? Sorry I'm so dumb when it come to planning! looking forward to making this from some layer cakes that I can't quite find a love for! Picnic quilts here we come!

Looking at your Grandmother's quilt, I recognize many of the fabrics she used. I still have some of them in my stash....

I came across this and it's perfect as I'm trying to cut up and reorganize a lot of my stash and I found a bin of 6 1/2" floral squares I'd cut MANY years ago ... so I'm already set for part 1 ! :) . Excited to put my scraps to use !

I've never done a quilt along before, but I want to try this one. Only after completing the blocks, I might want to put fewer of them together for a smaller-sized quilt, and use the remainder for something else. :-)
