Little Ruby Sew Along Part 3 | Hexagons

Hello and happy Wednesday! I've slowly but surely been making these fun pinwheel hexagons for the Fat Quarter Shop Little Ruby Sew Along. The blocks are really a lot of fun to make!

I've been using scraps from the Sundrops collection by Corey Yoder for Moda, and I decided to use the fun large floral for my contrast hexagons and triangles. This quilt just says summer to me!

The video for part 3 (you can watch it below) shows you how to lay out your half hexagons, blocks, and triangles. Then the pieces are sewn together in rows.

I pressed all of my seams open, stopping after each seam to press.

Then I sewed the rows together, again pressing the seams open.

After the rows are sewn together the edges are trimmed so they are straight. Be sure to leave 1/4" for the seam allowance. (The untrimmed example is below, and my trimmed example is the first photo in this post).

The final video shows the row/quilt construction.

My June Sew Sampler box arrived the other day, too! It's full of fun goodies...a pattern, Riley Blake solids in a rainbow of fun colors, a Frixion pen, blue Alpha bitties, a 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" square ruler, and some cute Fat Quarter Shop ribbon. It's always fun to see what is in the box!

Hope you're getting some sewing done...I'm off to do a little cleaning in my sewing room so I can start some new projects.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Favorites | Fabric and More!

Happy Friday! I hope you've had a wonderful week and are looking forward to a relaxing weekend with quilting!

For today's Friday Favorites post I thought I'd start out with one of my favorite quilts from my book C&T Publishing Fresh Family Traditions: 18 Heirloom Quilts for a New Generation. This quilt is Sassy...and it uses just 42 charm squares and 42 strips 2 1/2" x width of fabric (a charm pack and a jelly roll plus a little extra of what you will be using for your binding or backing).

I've been wanting to make this one again for quite a while, and I finally

Changes...

Happy Saturday! I've been trying to freshen up my blog over the last week or so...and that meant changing out the pictures in my blog header. It's been almost 8 years since I started A Quilting Life as a method to keep track of my projects, and I've only really changed things up once since then...so I thought it was time!

I chose three special photos...my Mahalo quilt...our Desert Bloom bundle, and

Choosing a Quilting Project

Hello! Today I thought I'd write about a topic that certainly applies to most quilters...how to go about choosing a project to work on. There are so many amazing projects and quilts to be made...how does one ever decide?

I've faced this dilemma at every stage as a quilter...as a beginner, as a more

Desert Bloom 4th of July Quilt

Happy Friday! So yesterday I took the day and made something that wasn't on my "to make this summer" list...

Camille of Thimbleblossoms posted a new "Stars and Stripes" quilt this week on Instagram, and I resisted at first. But then my daughter Chelsi took the day Monday and made one using just Desert Bloom fabrics...

Mahalo

Hello! Today I'm sharing a little bit more about one of my market quilts, Mahalo! This quilt happens to be one of my favorite quilts. Ever. The reasons I love this quilt are simple: my great-great grandmother made a version of this quilt, it's scrappy, and it's much easier to make than it looks!

If you think I've shared this before...you're right...kind of. I previously made
