Little Ruby Sew Along Part 3 | Hexagons

Hello and happy Wednesday! I've slowly but surely been making these fun pinwheel hexagons for the Fat Quarter Shop Little Ruby Sew Along. The blocks are really a lot of fun to make!

I've been using scraps from the Sundrops collection by Corey Yoder for Moda, and I decided to use the fun large floral for my contrast hexagons and triangles. This quilt just says summer to me!

The video for part 3 (you can watch it below) shows you how to lay out your half hexagons, blocks, and triangles. Then the pieces are sewn together in rows.

I pressed all of my seams open, stopping after each seam to press.

Then I sewed the rows together, again pressing the seams open.

After the rows are sewn together the edges are trimmed so they are straight. Be sure to leave 1/4" for the seam allowance. (The untrimmed example is below, and my trimmed example is the first photo in this post).

The final video shows the row/quilt construction.

My June Sew Sampler box arrived the other day, too! It's full of fun goodies...a pattern, Riley Blake solids in a rainbow of fun colors, a Frixion pen, blue Alpha bitties, a 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" square ruler, and some cute Fat Quarter Shop ribbon. It's always fun to see what is in the box!

Hope you're getting some sewing done...I'm off to do a little cleaning in my sewing room so I can start some new projects.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Favorites | Fabric and More!

Happy Friday! I hope you've had a wonderful week and are looking forward to a relaxing weekend with quilting!

For today's Friday Favorites post I thought I'd start out with one of my favorite quilts from my book C&T Publishing Fresh Family Traditions: 18 Heirloom Quilts for a New Generation. This quilt is Sassy...and it uses just 42 charm squares and 42 strips 2 1/2" x width of fabric (a charm pack and a jelly roll plus a little extra of what you will be using for your binding or backing).

I've been wanting to make this one again for quite a while, and I finally

Choosing a Quilting Project

Hello! Today I thought I'd write about a topic that certainly applies to most to go about choosing a project to work on. There are so many amazing projects and quilts to be does one ever decide?

I've faced this dilemma at every stage as a a beginner, as a more

experienced quilter, and as a designer. So...since I've been pondering this topic a little lately I thought I'd share some of my thoughts with you!

First, make a list of works in progress.

It always seems to come back to this. But as I thought about it, it really is important to know what you've started and still need to finish. I actually have lots of my works in progress projects that don't really have deadlines...they are projects I want to work on over a long period of time, so I'm not worried about finishing them in the near's just good to keep them in mind. You might even find a work in progress that you decide to finish in a different way than you originally open to changing up a project here and there!

Look through what you have.

Go through your fabric, your scraps, and even your patterns and books. See if anything just jumps out and demands to be started! Sometimes I have great projects ready and waiting to go, but I've just forgotten them over time. It also helps to make a list of these projects as you come across them. They might not end up being your next project, but it's also good to have a list of things you've been thinking about.

Decide on a skill level for the project.

Are you looking for something fast and fun? Are you looking for something that requires some precision? Or are you ready for a challenge. I actually like working on projects at all of these levels. I feel like sometimes I just need to do some mindless's good for the soul, you know...but then at other times I'm ready to increase my skill level and work to improve.

Browse for ideas.

Read blogs...look back at posts you've saved or kept unread for some reason. Browse Instagram: look back through the posts you've liked. Search Pinterest pages for quilt ideas you've already thought about. Walk through your house and try to think about projects that you might want to make for a specific area of the home. Think about upcoming birthdays and holidays--it's never too early to start planning for those!

Once you have a project in mind: choose fabrics!

Think about a color scheme and background options. Do you want to use brights or muted tones? Do you want a scrappy quilt? If you have any bundles or pre-cuts think about how you could use them for your project...and then add in some other fabrics for variety!

Have fun!

Now, go get started on your new's waiting for you!

I hope some of these thoughts and ideas have helped you...and if you have any other ideas to add, I'd so love it if you'd mention them in the comments.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Desert Bloom 4th of July Quilt

Happy Friday! So yesterday I took the day and made something that wasn't on my "to make this summer" list...

Hello! Today I'm sharing a little bit more about one of my market quilts, Mahalo! This quilt happens to be one of my favorite quilts. Ever. The reasons I love this quilt are simple: my great-great grandmother made a version of this quilt, it's scrappy, and it's much easier to make than it looks!

If you think I've shared this're right...kind of. I previously made

Minis and More Popsicle Quilts

Hello again! (If you are looking for the zipper bags, go here for the Simple Zipper Bag post). Two posts in one day...crazy! But since it's the first of the month, that means it's time for our Minis and More parade!

This month we featured the Mini Popsicles pattern by Fig Tree & Company--a fun summer pattern.  I'm beginning the parade with Brenda's version which she

made into a pillow. See more about her quilt (including her cute mini Tulips pillow) on her blog, The Quilting Nook!

Hildy also made a gorgeous version of the Mini Popsicles...I just love her table runner!

And Karen's version is wonderful as well...such a fun pattern!

Be sure to stop over at Island Life Quilts and see the amazing Popsicles quilts Michele has to share!

Michele and I also picked a pattern for's a fun star mini that is perfect if you want to do it in time for summer holiday decorating! Michele suggested my Star Bright mini for this month since it would be so fun to do for the 4th of July.

The full-size Star Bright quilt was one of my favorites I made with our Bright Sun collection.

I'm excited for the sew along...hope you'll join us and email a photo of your finished mini by July 1st!

Thanks so much for stopping by!
