Scrappy Log Cabin Quilt Blocks

Happy Tuesday! My jury service is complete, and I'm back to sewing! I've got all of my scrappy log cabin quilt blocks finished, cut, and divided for the block exchange. I'm really in love with the ones I've pieced and can't wait to see the blocks I'll receive in the swap.

I can't in any way take credit for this idea, but I'll explain the process for these blocks because it is the perfect way to use scraps! This method would make a fun holiday quilt of any kind, and would also be a great way to use any and all of those scrappy strips in the scrap bin!

We were asked to start with any size center square and then sew strips to opposite sides for log cabins. I started all of my blocks with a 5" charm square since I knew they were going to be cut in fourths, and I didn't want the centers to be too small.

I really didn't pay much attention to the size of the blocks until they had several strips added. Then I trimmed as necessary to make 16 1/2" blocks. The goal was to get to 20 1/2" blocks with the outer strips all being at least 2 1/2" cut. I started using 3" strips for my final rows so I could trim the blocks down to be exactly 20 1/2". Each person participating was to make twelve blocks.

After the blocks were finished and trimmed you cut each block in fourths. We were asked to keep one fourth of each block and send the remaining three sections from each block to swap.

So, I'm keeping twelve and mailing off 36! For even more details on this block and the swap, read Lissa's post here!

I won't be sharing this again until I've received my swap blocks and start putting it all together. It's on to another project!

Thanks so much for stopping by

This is a great idea. When you cut one block, all four of the smaller blocks look different. This is going to be such a scrappy quilt!

There's something about these blocks that is very satisfying. I love the red-white-blue theme, especially in your oh-so-CUTE fabrics! This should be a great swap, and I'll be back to see what you got in the swap and how it comes together!
