Just This and That

So yesterday was tough...I don't know if any of you have ever had this problem...but I finally decided it was time to take my machine in for a routine cleaning and service. I've had my machine about 18 months, and with all the sewing I do I knew it was definitely time. I clean all the lint from my bobbin case and the areas I can reach after every 5 bobbins...but it was time. There are only 2 machines ahead of me, so she shouldn't be gone too long...but it sure was hard to leave  my machine at the shop! I do have a great backup machine (my main machine is a Janome Memory Craft 6600, and my backup is a Janome Gem Platinum), but it's just not the same.  Anyway...

...thanks so much for all of the wonderful insight on my Farmer's Wife dilemma--I really appreciate all of the ideas and input. For now I'm continuing on. I made a list last night of 10 blocks of the remaining 26 that I'm okay with doing. Each little pile in the photo above is one block cut out and ready to sew;I'm hoping to cut out the rest of the blocks on my list today. Oh, and the tumblers in the first photo were cut from a couple of charm packs of Odds & Ends by Cosmo Cricket for Moda. It's such a fun line (actually I've loved each of their collections) to sew with, and I have the perfect spot for this runner after I get it quilted today(after I fix the little pucker that I didn't notice until looking at the photo just now).

I mentioned recently that it was my 4-year blogiversary on July 1st. Thank you so much for the good wishes! I can't even tell you how grateful I am I decided to start this little blog...I know I've said it before...but I have learned so much from the on-line quilting/sewing/crafting community of bloggers! I really appreciate every comment, every insight, and every post I've learned from. I am quite certain that I have received more than I could ever give.To say a small thank you, I've decided to do a giveaway each Saturday for the rest of the month.  First choice is a copy of The Civil War Sewing Circle by Kathleen Tracy along with a copy of the recent issue of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks. I love the Civil War Sewing Circle book so much that I bought it twice!

The other choice today is this wonderful collection of Riley Blake fabrics...nearly 7 yards of the Bella Blvd. Collection.

The fabrics will make the free project sheet quilt pictured to the right with everything included other than the backing. Thanks so much to Lollipos & Notions, an on-line Etsy seller, for sending along this fabric.

Just leave one comment on this post, please, letting me know which giveaway item you'd prefer if your name is picked.  Thanks so much...and have a wonderful weekend!

Edit:  The giveaway is now closed.  Congratulations to Sarah who won the fabrics and to Anna who won the books!

I haven't had my 'new' (two or three years old) machine serviced yet but my old machine was serviced by a man that came to the house - a perfect solution!! I hope you get your machine back soon!
If I was lucky enough to win I'd choose the Riley Blake fabric...congratulations on four years of wonderful blogging!

Thank you for the chance to enter such a lovely giveaway. If possible, I'd like Kathy's book. I don't have any of her books, although I belong to her Yahoo group and have made some of her quilts. It would be lovely to read one of the books too

Love your photos! Your Farmer's Wife blocks made me get out my book. That's about all I did though. I'm working to get my ufo's done but, sigh, it's taking forever. I love the Riley Blake fabrics. Love both of your giveaways, but I fell in LOVE with that fabric! I'm sure hoping I'll win :*)

Congrats on your anniversary! I can still remember the time that I was without my machine for 2 long weeks. Mind you it was not by choice but rather the motherboard on my beloved machine decided to depart from this earth. Somehow I managed to survive and my world was once again sunny! Thanks for the giveaway and I'd love to have the fabric.

Good luck with the sewing machine repair. We now have a dealer locally that services Berninas, which is what I've had for about 25 years. We get attached to our machines, don't we?

And it's so kind of you to offer a giveaway! I would be more interested in the fabric and pattern, as I already own a copy of the magazine. The Civil War book is tempting, but maybe I can find that on my own?

Thanks, again, and congratulations on the anniversary.

Thanks for the great giveaway! A girl can never have enough fabric, so I would choose the beautiful Riley Blake fabric.

Wow - How nice of you to have this giveaway, Shrri. I like any of the choices. Totally know how empty you feel when your machine is at the shop. It's crazy-bad! The last time I would have gone completely out of my mind, as the shop was over-full and it took 2 whole weeks to get her back. It was a good thing I had some Baby Janes to work on that needed hand sewing. ;)

Happy 4th!! I'd love to say that the books would be my pick although I know better. I'd actually rather have the fabric. I love Riley Blake prints.

I got a Brother machine years ago - my mother bought it as a wedding gift for my sister 35 years ago. She never even learned how to thread it. It spent the first two years loaned out to her neighbor. Finally Mom suggested she give it to me and she'd give her something else. I took it in to have it serviced to take to a class 4 years ago. The woman told me it was on its last leg. The "pattern cam" is plastic and cracked and the machine is so old she said they couldn't get parts for it anymore, (honestly it looks new). She told me it might last a day or a month but that's what that terrible noise is when I sew. ??? I never noticed a noise! Nothing other than that wonderful him of accomplishment. But every day I get out of it is a gift. I do find myself looking at new machines though. Don't tell my baby though. LOL

Christine M said...

I have a brother who was a sewing machine mechanic. He doesn't do it now but will service mine under protest! I'll invite him to dinner and suggest he brings his tools with him! It doesn't take him long but you would think I'd asked him to build me a machine from scratch! Congratulations on your 4 year blogaversary. If I'm lucky enough to be picked, I'd love the books. Thanks for the chance.

On the subject of your farmer's wife blocks, I hope you do the ones you like. I am never one that has to do things exactly the same, nor do I have to change everything to make it different, but it does have to be fun. There is also a difference between being challenged (which I doubt is your hold up) and just not really caring for a pattern!

Congrats on a job well done. i would love the fabric. last year i was on a bad atv wreck and was.life flighted to a trauma unit in another state, where i spent over three months. i had a broken pelvis, broken ribs, collapsed lung, a severe concussion and a broken left arm that has a metal plate that goes from my elbow to my shoulder, and yes i am left handed. my hand was paralyzed for over four. months. the Dr. said. quilting would be good therapy. when i was in rehab, i noticed a lot of people especially the elderly, liked a blanket on their lap when going up and down the hallways, but they had so Much trouble with the blankets getting tangled up in the wheels. so when i got home, using a special brace, i used all the fabric i had and made lap quilts and donated them go the rehab floor. So i could really use the fabric babscorbitt@gmail.com

I love that Civil War book. I'd go for the fabric since I have the book already. I hate bringing my machine for service. It feels like forever to get it back! The place I bought my machine at sends them out and it takes two weeks! Luckily, I brought my machine to the guy my aunt uses. It is ready the next day! Of course, I brought mine in on Saturday so I had to wait until Monday to get it back.

I so enjoy your blog, congratulations on four years and here's to many, many more!

I would choose the fabric. Thank you for the chance!

Since I didn't see your post until just now, Sunday morning, I may be too late but ... if I win, I'd love the book. Happy blogiversary!!!

I understand how you feel regarding leaving your machine for a few days. I need to take mine in for a spa day but don't want to be without it. LOL

Always fun projects to enjoy when I visit.

Congrats on 4 years of blogging - it's been fun. If luck is on my side I'd enjoy winning the fabric from Lollipop.

Oh if I were to ever win a giveaway - it would be the civil war magazine....and not for me either. My father-in-law introduced me to the wonderful world of quilting and he is a master at civil war quilts. He would love this one.

I'd rather have the fabric!

I only have "Apple of My Eye" line that I saw on a recent shop hop and bought 1/4yd cuts. Am going to cut it into 2 1/2" strips.

I really enjoy your blog. I would love to win the Civil War Sewing Circle and the Quiltmaker books. I so love pattern books and I've just begun a Row by Row exchange so I'm spending a lot of time looking at quilt block patterns!

I love those books! I have a bin of reproduction civil war fabrics and I'm not sure of patterns. I recently took my Bernina in for servicing. $200 later but it runs so nice. It has to be done once in awhile. We care for our babies for sure.

NancyL said...

I totally get the stress in leaving your "fav" machine at the repair shop! It's hard to compete with my old Bernina 931, even tho my "spare" is a newer Bernina! Congrats on your blogiversary coming up! If I was the winner, I'd choose the Riley Blake fabric--love their fabrics!!

Melodee said...

I have the same machine you do and love it as much. I have started making a habit of taking my machine in to be cleaned when I go out of town. It's always a minimum of week where I take mine, so I drop it off the day before I leave and it's ready when I get back. I just found your blog about a year ago and it has become one of my favorites. The books would be my choice if my number were to come up. Here's to more years of great blogs!

I can really relate to leaving your machine. I dread doing that every time and place that I take it to sends it out do It really does take too long. But it is the only place to take it to unless you drive 3hours.
I would love the book if my name gets picked. Thanks for sharing and for the great blog.

I also have a little old man who comes to my house to service my machines - no separation anxiety here!! And I know or sure they've been repaired, and repaired well!

Congratulations on 4 years of blogging - although it's a tough choice, my first choice would be those yummy fabrics!! Thanks for the chance to win!

I would love to win a copy of Kathy Tracy's Sewing Circle. I guess I am a bit of an "old soul" quilter. I love to see what all the Modern Quilters are up to, but I am always drawn to the beautiful reproduction fabrics and the book would allow me to get a better understanding of these fabrics and the women who first loved them. The more I understand the history of these fabrics the more I appreciate them.

I'd love to win the fabric as I already bought the Civil War Sewing Circle and love everything in it! Thanks so much for the chance to win! I also have the Janome 6600...love it.

You are always so sweet! Thanks so much for letting us comment on your work. You really do beautiful work. Love the colors of your tumblers. If I happened to win I would love the fabric choice. I don't have any Riley Blake fabric and it looks really pretty and would be nice to add to my collection. :-) Thanks again! K-
