I made a quilt for my daughter a few years ago for Christmas which was a surprise, it closely resembled her favorite British plaid. She keeps it folded and displayed in a glass top coffee table in her living room, which pleases me greatly.

I've received numerous homemade/handmade gifts over the years but my favorite has to be an Angel made using an antique pillowcase.

The first quilt I ever made was for my mother last Christmas. It might not be the best looking quilt (being my first one), but it is my favorite. Thanks for the giveaway!

Hmmm, probably the photo pillow that I made for my best friend last year. She actually cried when she saw it, seeing tears of joy pretty much told me I had given a winner ;-)

Thanks for the opportunity to win, you do lovely work

My favourite handmade gift is a large doll given to me by my grandmother complete with clothes that she crocheted for it. 40 years later I still have the doll waiting for the day when I can give it to my own daughter. At 2 years old she knows the doll is special and points to it often but respects the fact that the doll is "sleeping" and can't play with her at the moment.

I always had handmade goodies at xmas but i really loved a fabric frog made by my brother that i still have. Thanks for the giveaway!!

Our youngest was born the day after Christmas, so we have always said she was our best Christmas present ever. She, on the other hand, says we could have planned just a little better so that everyone wouldn't give her birthday presents wrapped in leftover Christmas paper..

Among the favorites -- Christmas ornaments made by my children one year when they were 7 and 5... their idea using little plastic pieces. Now they both tell me to throw them away - that they are the ugliest ornaments on the tree.

Rita said...

My quilting friend made me a Christmas Tree skirt for my wedding shower. I use every year and think of her. I love it.

Happy Cottage Quilter said...

I think the year that we had NO money and we stenciled rug samples for gifts. They made great rugs for the entry way, and they turned out really nice.

Jantine said...

That is a problem as we don't celebrate Christmas with presents. But we do have Sinterklaas. It is not very common giving self made presents. I remember one year when we decided we all had to make our present for someone else ourselves and my mother sewing my (now) DH shorts. Can't remember what I got or made. Another year my mother sewed me a beautiful jacket from furniture fabric, that was awesome!

When I was 7, I received a doll from Santa. My great aunt made a wardrobe of clothes for this doll. The clothes were all sewn by hand...satin pj's that were embroidered, a cape trimmed with real fur my aunt cut from her mink coat, black velvet dress...it was wonderful and I still have those things she made me 50+ years ago.

Thanks for the giveaway...

My favorite homemade gift was a dollhouse my dad made out of a bookcase. It was 2 stories, had lights, wallpaper, windows made from garden catalogue pictures and skinny white tape and provided me with years of entertainment. My husband made 2 large Barbie houses for my daughters when they were little too!

Teresa C said...

I've given and received many hand crafted gifts over the years, but for many years when my children were little I would make Christmas Eve pajamas for the family, a gift they could open that night and wear to bed. I love the photos of the girls with their freshly washed hair, all dressed in their new pajamas or nightgowns, smiling in anticipation of Santa coming. Sometimes my husband and I would have a matching pajama as well. The year I made my husband pink flannel boxers........ That's a fun photo.

I love to give homemade. Something from heart and hands is best because I spent much more time thinking about the person than I would have if I make a purchase. I love to give to quilt related items and baked items. For me...it is all about time spent thinking of the person while making the gift.

The favorite handmade gifts I've made were some tied fleece blankets I made for my then-boyfriend's (now husband) nieces for Christmas. The best handmade gift I received was for Mother's Day from my son's daycare--his painted footprint as a vase holding little foam flowers. I almost cried when I received it!

This was back in the 1970s. A fuschia pink afghan knitted by my grandmother. I wanted one sooooooo bad I could hardly stand it. I considered it too much to ask for so I don't know how she knew. But Christmas there was a huge bulky package for me and I knew what it was before I opened it. It was the best!

When I was four my mom, who is NOT a sewer, spent weeks and many tries working on a handmade Raggedy Ann doll and matching dress for me. It was my favorite book at the time and all I wanted that year. I still have both and love them all the more because it's one of the last things she ever sewed, because like I said she's not much of a sewer. So it was truely an act of love for her to make it. Now she knits for us, something she likes a lot more.

The very best handmade gift I received when I was a girl growing up was my grandmother made a large suitcase full of dress up clothes for a doll that I called my "high heal" doll (long before Barbie). The clothes were made from scraps of fabrics from both grandmothers' and my mother's sewing. The grandmother that made the doll clothes always made her quilts from the flour sacks from her cafe that she owned. The best gifts that I have made and given are quilts for my family and friends. Oldest son received a Texas Tech quilt last Christmas just because he is such a fan of TT football. Gay

All-time favorite homemade Christmas gift was from my Granny probably close to 60 years ago: an upside down doll, which was one of her specialties. This one was little red riding hood on one side and the other side had grandma in a nightgown and cap, and the cap reversed so that the big bad wolf was on the back side of grandma's head. Not sure but I believe she made this and many others like it from a homemade pattern that she developed. Wish I still had it!

Melissa C said...

My favorite that I received was my first quilt. I pieced it and then found that I hated hand quilting. My mom took the quilt, finished the quilting, and gave it back to me as my Christmas gift.

Last year I made one of my daughters a little dolly for Christmas and she carried it around for the rest of the year. I loved watching her play with it everyday. So, that was my favorite. Thanks for the giveaway!

My favorite Christmas gifts made by me were soups in a jar. At first my one cousin looked at it funny, wondering what to do with it. A few months later she called me and thanked me for it as she had been in a car accident and it came inreally handy for a quick and healthy dinner for her family. :)

I think it is a tie between 2 gifts I made in high school, the first was a red plaid dinosaur for my new step sister, who was 8 at the time, she loved it! The second was a 8 spoke 36" in diameter God's Eye for my mother in colors for the new house.

What a nice thing to giveaway.

Love my schnibbles you gave me. This is so cute. My favorite homemade gift was what my MIL did for all my kids last year. She went through literally thousands and thousands of family photos and made every grandchild their personal scrapbook. I hate scrapbooking so I was so glad to see my kids had a photo albumn. My teenage kids even loved them. It was a fabulous effort and a great gift. You've got a lot of comments. I'd love to read them all but that is fairly impossible!

My favorite Christmas gift is one I am anticipating. My daughter (15) is giving me a recording of her viola/piano duet of Hummel's Fantaisie.

My favorite handmade gift I have given was a silk scarf I wove for my oldest daughter several years ago.

A couple of years ago I made about 10 four-patch bags for my daughter's American Girl and Life of Faith dolls. I also made her a coordinating jelly bag; Bitty Baby got a quilt and Bitty Bear a mini quilt. That was a lot of work, but worth the reaction. :)

When my kids were little they always made special gifts for me at school...those are my favorites. I put them out EVERY Christmas! One of my most favorites is a little paint can that was decorated to look like Santa. It was filled with little goodies like magnets and stuff my youngest made :)

hands down my most favorite and treasured Christmas gifts I've ever received are the handmade ornaments that my "Momma Newt" gave to all of us every year. I was the youngest of 18 grand kids so she usually let me have first pick each year. I love having them on my tree every year - especially since it's been 14 years since she died.

thanks for the great giveaway! Love from Texas! ~bonnie

I received an awesome doll house made by my Dad's friend for Christmas one year. I still have it and can't wait to give it to my daughter in another year or two.

The Christmas present I will never forget was undoubtedly a wooden bed that my father made me. Moreover, this Christmas was very special. It was a very difficult year for my parents, there was no money to buy gifts for for the four children and this was the solution. I remember that the bed had "tucha" written on the headboard, with some letters cut out of sticky blue velvet.

My very favorite is a drawing that my father made when he was seven that was tacked up in his grandfather's barn. When the barn was being taken down, my aunt found it and had it framed for me. I'm close to my Dad, who was very close to his grandfather, so it was a very dear gift.

I would have to say the best gift I remember making was a memory table cloth for my mother in law. With some help from my husband we transfered old family photographs onto a table cloth. We most have gone through thousands of pictures. The best part of it was watching her face when she opened it. She was moved to tears. I don't think I will forget that.

The powder blue & white sweater with the ice skating bunnies on it that my Great-Grandmother knit for me. I love that sweater. I wore it until I had to keep the sleeves pushed up all the time because the were too short. I think that was 4th grade. I still have that sweater. I think the matching hat is long lost... I think about have someone knit me an adult size copy; but that means I'd have to let it out of my house and I don't think I can do that.

What a fun giveaway Sherri, thanks so much ... I LOVE to win one of your gorgeous creations!!!
My fave Chrissy gift that I received was when I was about 6 or 7 (a loooong time ago LOL) and my Mum handknitted a beautiful outfit ... cape, tights, dress, booties ... for my bestest dolly!!! I still remember that very clearly it was sooo pretty. And my favourite gift given was TO my Mum, I made her a quilt a couple of years ago and her reaction is what makes the memory so sweet and so spesh ... ;o), she cried with delight :o)!!
Thanks for reminding me of such lovely memories!!!!
Hugs,
Joy :o)

This one is easy! My Grandmother Staples (the quilter in the family) the woman who passed this precious craft onto me passed away September 2008. I inherited everything sewing related and also a beaded chanel bed spread that she received as a wedding gift in the 1940’s. This bed spread had seen better days so I decided to cut it and make Christmas gifts for my aunts. I made chanel snowmen for each aunt/uncle and there was not a dry eye in the house. I also made myself one and would not trade it for the anything in the world.

My favorite Christmas gift was from my applique teacher and she made a velvet bird that is covered in glitter. It is like a pincushion but I would never use it as a pincushion. It has a tag on it it that says"Believe" I leave it sitting out all the time.

When I was a little girl my grandmother would make me clothes every year, and I love every single one of them. I still have many of them stored at my parents' house and I would think of her every time I see them. I think this is why I picked up sewing myself, is to be able to make memories and keepsakes for my children and their children.

Thanks for hosting this giveaway!
